The Capital One arena was postponed for the venue in 2024. This is the third time the ACC tournament has been held in the district. It most recently came to DC in 2016 when the Capital One Arena was named the Verizon Center, beating North Carolina Virginia in the final with 61:57.

“The men’s ACC basketball tournament was a great experience and hospitality at the Capital One Arena,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford in a statement. “We look forward to returning to Washington DC and appreciate Greensboro for welcoming and welcoming us to these unique and challenging times.”

The Capital One arena has not hosted an event since March after DC Mayor Muriel E. Bowser ordered live entertainment to be banned and Ted Leonsis, CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, announced it was closing down out of caution set indefinitely.

Leonsis is the owner of the Washington Capitals of the NHL and the Washington Wizards of the NBA, both of which play home games at the Capital One Arena. The NHL moved to two capital cities, Toronto and Edmonton, to stage their playoffs, and the NBA played a handful of regular season games and all of their playoffs in a bubble near Orlando.

“The health and safety of our community is of paramount importance and we appreciate the difficult decision of the Atlantic Coast Conference,” said Dave Touhey, president of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, in a statement. “We look forward to seeing ACC return in 2024.”

Greensboro Coliseum has hosted the ACC men’s basketball tournament 27 times. More than any other venue in the rotation, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn is next season. The tournament will be held in Greensboro the following year before returning to the district.

The ACC tournament has been held in eight cities and a dozen arenas since it was first held in 1954. Since the turn of the century, the ACC tournament has been held in cities with conference space, including four in Charlotte and three in Atlanta. twice in Brooklyn and once in Tampa.

Florida State is the reigning ACC tournament winner after winning the title after six games at the March 12th conference. The Seminoles took first place in the ACC in the regular season and thus secured number 1 in the ACC tournament.

The announcement of the cancellation came as the Seminoles and Clemson warmed up in the square at Greensboro Coliseum.

“The partnership between the ACC and the City of Greensboro is extremely special and spans nearly seven decades,” Swofford said in a statement at the time. The award of another tournament to the city was the correct course of action given the situation last season.

Duke won the last fully competitive ACC tournament, beating Florida State in the 2019 final (73-63) behind Zion Williamson, the tournament’s most outstanding player, at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.

The women’s basketball tournament will also be held in Greensboro March 3-7.

It’s unclear whether fans will be allowed to compete in this season’s tournaments, especially given the recent record surge in cases across the country.
