Face masks will be an immutable part of our foreseeable future, so it is not surprising that manufacturers are introducing new and innovative designs to make them more comfortable and effective. They are even represented at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show with four high-tech masks.

MaskFone

You have likely seen people pulling their masks down to speak on the phone or being forced to listen to muted calls from mask wearers. British telecommunications company Binafone combined a Bluetooth headset (and built-in microphone) with a face mask to solve this problem. The MaskFone has detachable BlueTooth earbuds that offer a battery life of 8 hours. The mask is waterproof to protect against the elements. Replaceable filters are available in N95 / FFP2 quality to protect against tiny particles such as coronavirus, or in a lower PM2.5 quality for larger particles such as dust. MaskFone is available immediately. The website lists the price at $ 49.99.

Dino Lalvani, owner of Binafone and inventor of Maskfone, said in a press release: “Especially considering the current situation, MaskFone solves the most common problem of removing the mask in order to speak on the phone in order to be heard clearly and not be seen . ” You and your environment. With MaskFone, you and your surroundings will always stay safe and healthy. “

AirPop Active + Halo

The AirPop Active Plus is the newest entry from Airpop, which hit the US market last fall. It’s the successor to last year’s AirPop Active, which combines lightweight construction with a tight seal and replaceable full-size filters that are expected to last 40 hours. The company touts its membrane seal, unique “airfield” design, flex frame chassis and air knit material for its fit and filtration capability.

The new Active + is an “intelligent” device with a connected app and the eponymous Halo sensors that monitor breathing patterns, filter efficiency and external air quality. For iPhone users, Active + offers HealthKit integration so you can track your stats natively in iOS. It costs $ 149.99.

The Active + Halo is available for pre-order now.

LG PuriCare

PuriCare is marketed as a “portable air purifier” and has a different design than most masks. It has a hard plastic shell with a washable face pad reminiscent of a hospital respirator to form the seal. The filters are supplied as replaceable cartridges that are inserted into the side slots. These H13 HEPA filters (a similar quality to an N95) are combined with two fans for ventilation and to aid breathing. The mask also contains a patented breathing sensor that adjusts the fan speed based on the wearer’s breathing. An optional UV housing can disinfect the mask between uses. If you choose to use the fan, you need to know that the mask needs to be recharged after 4-8 hours.

This year’s electronic show awarded PuriCare Honoree status in the Wearable Tech category. It is available in some Asian markets. It is priced at $ 152.

Project Hazel

Gaming peripherals manufacturer Razer is leaving its comfort zone with Project Hazel, an “everything plus kitchen sink” face mask that is still in the concept phase and bundles most of the functions of the other masks mentioned above. Replaceable N95 filter cartridges? Check. Silicone lining to improve fit? Check. Active ventilation so you can breathe easier? Yes. Built-in microphone and amplifier? It has them too. There is even a reservoir that sterilizes the mask with UV light. When talking about light, there are RGB lights outside that you can use to express your personal style. The hard shell of the mask is transparent, so you no longer have to guess whether someone is grinning or grimacing.

On the question of whether Project Hazel will ever reach the production stage, Razer says on its website that Project Hazel is a prototype and is asking interested consumers to join its notification list.

Take them home

The Covid-19 pandemic is going on longer than predicted, and masks will no doubt stay here, at least for a while. Companies like this keep innovating and creating better, more comfortable, and more effective designs to make life a little easier.
