Ryan accused assistant sports coach Justin Maher of urging the player’s wife, who was in Florida at the time and in “extreme pain,” to go to an emergency room late at night. The doctors there found that she had an ectopic pregnancy, which is when a fertilized egg begins to develop outside of the uterus.
In this case, according to Ryan, the egg had settled in his wife’s fallopian tube, which was “about to burst”.
“In the end, they saved her and prevented a lot of what could have been done,” said Ryan. He added that his wife, Ashley Bragg Ryan, has “recovered well”.
Ryan shared the episode to highlight “the kind of organization we have here”. Ryan was a two-time Super Bowl winner with the New England Patriots in his first four years in the league and spent three seasons with the Tennessee Titans before joining the Giants in August. Ryan was delighted to sign with New York because of his freshman head coach, former Patriots assistant Joe Judge.
According to Ryan, the judge said on Tuesday of the 29-year-old defensive, “If you have to fly to Florida, don’t worry about football.”
“And that’s exactly what Joe is,” said Ryan, “as a man and as a coach.”
Maher took care of Ryan after suffering a hip injury to the Buccaneers with a 25-23 loss. Ryan’s wife had traveled to Florida to both check on her home and cast a ballot in Tuesday’s election.
Ryan said he was “beaten up after the game” and announced that his wife told him about stomach pain around 1am.
“She wanted to sleep it off,” he said. “She was in extreme pain, but she said she would wait until morning. I spoke to one of our trainers about the symptoms.
“He said, ‘No, she needs to go to the emergency room.’ My wife eventually went to the emergency room and got the ectopic pregnancy.
Ryan is from New Jersey and started dating his wife when they were both athletes at Rutgers University, where she was a softball player. While they were in the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia to get married in 2017, the sight of stray dogs inspired them to ask their guests to contribute to a local animal shelter instead of wedding favors.
The couple, who have two children, started their own animal rescue organization, and Bragg Ryan has become a certified professional dog trainer, according to the foundation’s website.
With the defeat on Monday, the Giants fell to 1-7, a far cry from the success Ryan experienced not only with the Patriots but also with the Titans. To hear him tell on Wednesday, there is nowhere else where he would rather be.
“I know we care about Xs and O and win and lose, but there are really good people here,” said Ryan. “That’s why I came here. There are really good coaches here, there are really a lot of people behind the scenes who are working really hard to make us win.
“I’ll do everything I can to play for a coach like this and for an organization like this because if I didn’t, I don’t know if my wife would be here today.”
