This year’s 55th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has been postponed from the beginning of July to August 20-28, 2021.

The organizers cited the ongoing pandemic situation in the Czech Republic as a motivating factor for the move.

“Posting the festival dates by seven weeks offers the best chance of bringing this cultural event closer to the extent to which audiences and festival goers have become accustomed,” the festival said.

“Our decision to take this step was made after consulting experts and carefully considering the current situation. We hope that vaccinations will increase significantly in the coming months, which will bring the pandemic under control and allow us to hold the Karlovy Vary Festival in a form that is as safe as possible for guests and visitors. Of course we are ready to comply with all applicable regulations, ”added KVIFF Managing Director Kryštof Mucha.

The Carlsbad Film Festival does not want to postpone the July dates despite the Cannes overlap

The artistic director of KVIFF, Karel Och, commented: “The postponement of the dates of the 55th festival does not mean a long-term change in the traditional time window of the Karlovy Vary festival. The 56th edition of the festival will return to its usual time from July 1-9, 2022. ”

The Czech Republic has had problems coping with the pandemic for some time. While the global number of Covid cases has been falling for six weeks, the Central European country has almost record levels of new infections. The death toll has just passed 20,000 and the death rate is among the highest in the world.

The festival took place in July and was supposed to conflict with the Cannes Film Festival, which was moved to a July slot this year due to the pandemic. But doubts about the feasibility of the Riviera event at this time are growing and, as we first revealed, the Cannes organizers are setting up a separate, earlier market for the industry.

The end of August position for KV means that it will take place shortly before Venice, which is scheduled to begin on September 1, 2021.
