UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has expressed regrets with training partner Islam Makhachev after retiring from a high-profile UFC main event this weekend, telling him that injuries are inevitable.

It was revealed overnight that the 18-1 Makhachev had been removed from this weekend’s Las Vegas bout against former defending champions Rafael dos Anjos after contracting staph infection. This is a major blow to the highly rated Dagestani Sambo Fighting World Champion.

Makhachev was unofficially anointed as his own successor by Khabib Nurmagomedov in the days after he announced his resignation after his win on “Fight Island” against Justin Gaethje last month – but those plans must be in at least for now take a back seat.

A clearly disappointed Makhachev took to social media to clarify the reason after the news of his withdrawal.

“The only thing that calms down is that we can not get away from what was prescribed,” wrote Makhachev via translation on Instagram.

“I put a lot of time and effort into this fight, I was at my best, but as soon as I started losing weight and the immune system got weaker I got an infection that would knock me out for at least a month. Our team was already at that camp Encountered this infection more than once and many had to call off their fights.

“This year has been difficult for my career, a lot of fights have been canceled, but I promise you I will go all the way to this belt no matter what it takes.”

And now Nurmagomedov, a man who has seen more than part of his injury setbacks during his record breaking career, has sent a message of support to his friend and training partner, telling Makhachev that these are the kind of challenges to be faced by, to become champion.

The news contains several weeks of ups and downs for Nurmagomedov, Makhachev, and several other members of their team. Khabib, of course, was successful in defending his £ 155 world title against Justin Gaethje in Abu Dhabi, but shortly thereafter shocked the MMA world by announcing his retirement from the sport at the age of just 32.

Makhachev has also suffered some strange strokes of fate recently. Today’s news is the second time in a month that a fight with Ddos Anjos fell apart just days before the time they were supposed to step into the cage.

Additionally, Khabib’s cousin and training partner Umar Nurmagomedov was removed from the UFC 254 fight card last month after contracting a staph infection as well.
