Rival bosses Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jurgen Klopp both avoid talking about the implications of the title race as they prepare their respective teams for a Premier League bout at Anfield on Sunday.

Manchester United manager Solskjaer went about his business calmly and despite fan criticism of his management, individual players and the way the club was run at board level, the Norwegian was slowly getting the tide at Old Trafford Club turn.

They are now at the top of the Premier League, having started their first year as leaders since Sir Alex Ferguson’s side won the Scots final title in 2013.

With only 17 games played, Solskjaer is not carried away by the success of his team in the previous season.

“You don’t get anything for being at the top of the league in January – we never appreciated that,” he said.

“It matters where you end up at the end of the season.

“You are always excited when you play against teams of this quality.

“Form goes out of the window and it doesn’t matter. When you go to Anfield, it’s a big game for the club, the players and the fans. I’m looking forward to it.”

Despite United’s high position, Solskjaer knows Liverpool haven’t lost a Premier League home game since April 2017. For this reason, he puts his team in the role of outsiders before the Anfield trip.

“Being where we are in the league just gives us more confidence and it’s a sign of where we are,” he said.

“The game against the champions, who have an amazing record at Anfield, is a great test for us.

“Can we go there and cause a stir? We are the challengers and they deserve the right to be champions.

“We want something they have. If you look at the results of the past few seasons, then [victory] would be upset. “

In the meantime, Liverpool boss Klopp doesn’t read too much about Sunday’s duel with regard to the entire title race. The 2019-20 champions won the league at a gallop, but this season’s title fight seems wide open.

Klopp told reporters there was “still a long way to go” in the title race, and said his focus was only on beating Liverpool’s longtime rivals.

“To win a football game, to win against United, is enough in itself. It is not necessary that there is a special element that we have a home game and want to win,” he said.

“There is no additional add-on in the game because they are in the situation they are in. They deserve the points they have so far and we have ours.

“Manchester City are one game behind and they’re very close too. We don’t think about other teams all the time. We’re just trying to win football games and United are good. They always have been.”
