Lionel Messi scored twice against Granada to bring his La Liga goals to 11 for the season, setting a new milestone whose game could take years.

Messi’s one-two punch meant the Argentine ace became the first player in league history to hit double digits for 15 consecutive seasons.

The record was discovered and shared online by football statistics specialist Opta, who hailed Messi’s performance as an “alien”.

Barcelona scored comfortable winners at Los Carmenes thanks to Messi’s doubles and a brace from striker Antoine Griezmann.

The result put Ronald Koeman’s side in third place, two points behind Real Madrid in second and four points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, who have three games against the Catalans in their hands.

Messi’s record joins a huge list of achievements accumulated during Argentina’s brilliant career.

He already holds the record for the most goals scored for a single club, while his 79 goals in 2012 is a record for the most goals scored in club competition in a calendar year. He also holds the record for the most goals in a club season, with his 73 goals in the 2011/12 season still counting as a world record today.

In addition, he holds the record for the longest shot on goal in a domestic league thanks to his incredible 21-game streak, in which he scored 33 goals in 2012/13. At the same time, he is the only player who has scored more than 40 goals for 10 consecutive seasons.

Messi’s latest record may not be one to improve on before retiring, however. The Argentine superstar will be leaving Camp Nou this summer. Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and a move to Inter Miami in the MLS top the list of potential applicants.

But while he is still wearing a Barca shirt, the Catalan side will continue to benefit from his superb scoring opportunity that shows no signs of slowing down.
