Because emissions come from so many sources, it is difficult to estimate the exact amount of energy wasted on inefficient or unnecessary artificial light. However, the International Dark Sky Association estimates that 35% of artificial light is wasted through poor aiming or unshielded light. In the US alone, that equates to about $ 3 billion a year spent “making the sky shine”.
