NFL star Deandre Baker, who may have been sentenced to life imprisonment for robbery as of May, is a free man as Florida authorities drop the case after a lawyer was arrested for trying to extort money from Baker .

Baker, a first choice in the 2019 NFL Draft, and Quinton Dunbar, cornerback of the Seattle Seahawks, were arrested in May after the couple and two other men stole thousands of dollars and various precious trinkets from partygoers at a private event in Florida.

Baker was fired by the New York Giants that summer, while Dunbar’s charges were dropped in August because he was still an active member of the Seattle List.

However, Baker could find a way back to the NFL soon after the case fell apart on Monday when a Florida attorney was arrested by authorities for allegedly trying to extort money from Baker on behalf of alleged victims of the robbery.

According to several reports, William Dean attempted to extort $ 250,000 from Baker for each of his customers, who then presumably dropped the allegations or, as police put it, “do anything you want while the money is right”.

It was reported by ESPN in September that the alleged victims had already withdrawn their testimony and admitted that Baker “did not participate, directly or indirectly, in a robbery, or participated in a robbery at the scene or elsewhere”.

Paul R. Valcore, the assistant prosecutor for Florida, later confirmed the case was dead after the witnesses’ credibility was questioned.

“The alleged victims and the known witnesses are no longer cooperative and their credibility is invariably tarnished,” he said.

Baker’s own layperson, Bradford Cohen, said in August that the entire case was flawed because it was based on the testimony of people he described as “legal liars”.

“Since you know you have allowed liars – legal liars, there is no way around it or changing history,” he told ESPN.

“They are legal liars and convicted criminals at best. You have four men who are convicted criminals and legal liars. They filed on their word against a man who has no criminal history and who always gives back to his community.

“I wish I could think what you are thinking, but it is an impossibility. It is such a bad judgment that you cannot even put yourself in your position to imagine what he thought to bring this case in.”
