Two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton will appear as the nefarious Catherine de Medici in the new Starz original series, The Serpent Queen.
Morton (Minority Report, The Walking Dead) will play Catherine on “The Dark Legend of de Medici” from writer and executive producer Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road).
The series is also produced by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games Franchise) and Erwin Stoff (The Matrix). Stacie Passon (Transparent) will direct several episodes, including the premiere.
The multi-award-winning British actress Samantha Morton first attracted international attention in Carine Adler’s Under the Skin and received the Boston Film Critics Award for Best Actress.
The Serpent Queen is described as “a sly depiction of one of the most influential women to ever wear a crown. Considered an ordinary and simple immigrant, Catherine de Medici is married as an orphaned teenager at the 16th century French court. She is said to bring forth a fortune in dowry and many heirs, only to find that her husband is in love with an older woman, she, dowry is unpaid and she cannot receive. But only with her intelligence and determination is she able to keep her marriage alive and master the blood sport that the monarchy is better than any other and that has ruled France for 50 years. “
Based on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda, the eight-episode series is being produced for Starz by Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment.
The Serpent Queen is broadcast on Starz in the USA and Canada as well as on its international premium streaming platform Starzplay across its entire presence in Europe, Latin America and Japan.
