Liverpool fans’ worst fears appear to have been confirmed after reports that star defender Virgil van Dijk will miss the remainder of the Premier League season after injuring his ACL on Saturday.
Van Dijk appeared to have suffered a nasty overstretch of his right knee after a thundering challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the first half of the Merseyside derby on Saturday afternoon.

Considered one of the best defenders in the world, the Dutchman was clearly uncomfortable and was quickly replaced by Joe Gomez.
He was taken to a nearby hospital to investigate the extent of the injury. According to the beIn Sports broadcast, it was revealed that van Dijk had injured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee – an injury that would likely incapacitate him for a period of seven to eight months.

Should this initial diagnosis be correct, it would essentially mean that van Dijk is unlikely to play for Liverpool until the start of next season and could also put his participation in the European Championships in jeopardy next summer.
Van Dijk’s injury will prove doubly frustrating for Liverpool as they haven’t even received a penalty for Pickford’s blatant foul as replays have shown Van Dijk was only marginally offside leading up to the incident – and Pickford nothing else either almost certainly would have been a red card.
Liverpool have further fears after star summer importer Thiago also complained of a knee injury after a tough challenge that led to the sacking of Everton’s Richarlison.
The Spanish midfielder finished the game but was also taken to hospital for scans. There is still no information about the extent of his injury.

However, van Dijk’s loss will prove to be hard to digest for Liverpool fans. He has been ubiquitous in Liverpool’s last two Premier League games, finishing second at the 2019 Ballon d’Or. Now the master must face the daunting prospect of defending his crown without a defensive heartbeat.
