Today’s Argentina No. 10 Lionel Messi has reached out on social media to send a message of encouragement and support to the most iconic player to wear this shirt, Diego Maradona, following the legend’s successful brain surgery.

Maradona had an operation to remove a blood clot from his brain. The legend’s personal physician claimed that he “successfully evacuated the hematoma” and that Maradona “tolerated the operation very well” after the 80-minute procedure.

“The steps are now being observed, but they are being controlled,” he continued.

“It’ll depend on how he does it. It’s not very complex, but it’s still brain surgery.”

Fans gathered outside the hospital to send their messages of support to Maradona while Messi posted his own message on social media to his former national team manager on his Instagram page, which had an astonishing 168.5 million followers.

In his message, Messi posted a photo of himself and Maradona during their time together on international service.

In the attached caption, he said he was looking forward to seeing the legendary World Cup winner back on his feet soon.

“Diego, all the power of the world,” he wrote (via translation).

“My family and I want to see you well as soon as possible. A warm hug!”

Maradona is a national hero in Argentina after a stellar career in which many rated him as the greatest footballer of all time.

His club legacy, which has played for Boca Juniors, Napoli and Barcelona among others, has been remarkable but has been overshadowed by his incredible international career.

His on-pitch performances in Mexico were among the greatest ever seen at a World Cup when he led Argentina to the 1986 FIFA World Cup – an achievement Messi never repeated despite his incredible club career.

As his career came to an end, controversy arose as issues of substance abuse and volatile behavior made him one of the most notorious former players in the world.

Despite his troubles, Maradona remains a popular figure, even with Messi, whose message attracted more than 4.3 million likes at the time of writing.
