The United States will ship 1.5 million excess doses of AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine to Canada next week, Canadian Procurement Secretary Anita Anand announced on Friday.

Washington said last week it would send millions of cans to neighboring Canada and Mexico. AstraZeneca is approved in both countries but is still awaiting the FDA’s green light for use in the US.

“I can now confirm that (the cans) will arrive in Canada by truck next Tuesday,” Anand said at a press conference in Ottawa.

Separately, Canada has ordered 20 million AstraZeneca jabs as well as another two million doses of the same formula from the Serum Institute of India.

Ottawa has ordered or reserved a total of more than 400 million vaccine doses from seven suppliers for a population of 38 million.

So far, only 11 percent of Canadians have received at least one shot, but authorities said vaccine deliveries are expected to spike in the coming weeks.
