George Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd said the legal defense team of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin “tried” to assassinate his brother’s character.
“He’s fighting for his life just like I am fighting for my brother’s life. We saw the video. We have facts. You’re in there trying to murder his character. If you don’t have the facts, that’s what you have to do, ”he told CNN.
Describing the first day of Chauvin’s trial as an “emotional roller coaster ride,” Floyd said he didn’t know the former cop knelt on his brother for nine minutes and 29 seconds.
“I only hear the video for eight minutes and 46 seconds every time I watch it. I never try to watch the entire video. It’s not something you want to see – your brother tortured and screamed and asked about our mother and said, tell my children I love them. I can not breath. ‘”
“For everyone else, it was a case and a thing. For me it was my brother. Someone I grew up with – who I ate with, who I slept with in the same bed that I went fishing with. I just watch him dance with my mother. These are the things I think about when I think about my brother. He was a protector. He was someone we could go to when we were in trouble and needed anything, ”he said on Tuesday.
