Mauricio Pochettino could entice Argentine compatriot Lionel Messi to join him in Paris Saint-Germain once he’s reportedly confirmed as manager at the French giants.

Pochettino’s appointment as PSG boss is expected to be imminent after Ligue 1 champions Thomas Tuchel just hours after his 4-0 win over Strasbourg and just a few months after the German led the club to their first Champions League final had dismissed ruthlessly.

The highly-rated Pochettino, 48, has been unemployed since Tottenham handed over his marching orders in November 2019 and is expected to return to PSG – the club where he played as a player in the early 2000s.

Meanwhile, speculation about Messi’s future continues and the 33-year-old Barcelona icon, who failed to force an exit from the Catalans at the end of last season, will be able to speak to potential applicants from January of the expiry of his current one Contract in summer.

Qatar-owned PSG is one of the few clubs with the financial leverage to meet Messi’s likely wage demands in the current Covid-ravaged climate and Le Parisien has now claimed that Pochettino’s arrival could be the perfect kick-off for Messi to take a move . The Argentine couple shared history when both men began their football careers at Newells Old Boys in their homeland.

Bringing Messi to Paris would mean reuniting the six-time Ballon d’Or winner with former Barcelona strike partner Neymar, who made a world record change to Paris in 2017, and connecting him to 22-year-old French sensation Kylian Mbappe and form a front three that world football would envy.

Somewhat embarrassing is that PSG have not yet officially confirmed Tuchel’s sacking, although the news has been widespread since Christmas Eve.

Mbappe also paid tribute to Tuchel in a message on social media.

The German leaves the club after two and a half responsible seasons, having led them to two consecutive Ligue 1 titles as well as a national cup success.

However, Tuchel gave a controversial interview last week discussing the PSG manager’s delicate policies that may have helped speed his exit.

Fans, meanwhile, have asked the club to announce Pochettino, who spent five years at Spurs and led them to a surprise run to the Champions League final in 2019 but left north London without silverware during his reign.

Ligue 1 success will be the bare minimum expected of PSG owners and fans. If Pochettino can lure Messi to Paris, Champions League glory will surely follow.
