Speaking to the media after a service in the Royal Lodge Windsor chapel, the Duke of York said, “I am very sorry and I support my mother who probably feels it more than anyone.”
“He was a remarkable man, I loved him as a father. He was so calm. If you had a problem, he would think about it,” Andrew said. “He was always someone to go to.”
The royal family themselves “all feel a great sense of loss,” said Andrew. “We almost lost the nation’s grandfather.”
When asked how his mother is doing, the Duke replied, “The Queen is, as you would expect, an incredibly stoic person. And she described his death as a miracle. And she ponders.
“She described it as leaving a great void in her life,” he said, adding that the family “gathered together to make sure we are there to support them.”
Andrew, often referred to as the Queen’s favorite son, has stepped down from his public duties following a disastrous interview with the BBC in 2019 because of his association with well-known sex offender and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Prince Edward, the Queen and the youngest child of Prince Philip, described the feeling of shock over his father’s death.
“As much as you try to prepare for something like this, it’s still a terrible shock and we’re still trying to come to terms with it and it’s very, very sad,” Edward, the Earl of Wessex, told the media after the same service.
He added that the royal family cherished “the extraordinary honors and memories everyone had”.
Edward’s wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, noted how Philip “always exchanged words” in and around the royal estates. “They all meant a lot to him and he was always very interested in everything they did. So they all have stories to tell. Most of them are pretty funny too,” she added.
Princess Anne, the only daughter of the Queen and Philip, said the Duke was her “teacher”, “supporter” and “critic”.
“His ability to treat each person as an individual with their own abilities comes from all organizations in which he was involved,” she said in a statement on Sunday. “We will miss him, but he leaves a legacy that can inspire us all.”
“You know it will happen, but you are never really ready,” added the princess.
