A skier died in the 30 km Avachinsky Marathon in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky after hitting a tree during the long-distance race on Sunday.
It is believed that the nameless participant was killed while participating in the race. Alleged footage of the alleged tragedy has been uploaded to social media and depicts an incident where a skier loses control if he turns right before bumping directly into a tree.
Two other skiers also lost control of the curve, but appeared to have got away unharmed.
The athlete who cut the tree lay in the snow for a few moments before another skier collided with him. Several spectators then stormed towards the scene.
The late man reportedly represented the Russian city of Krasnodar and had previously lived near the site of the race.
Skiers were required to produce a doctor’s letter prior to the race stating that they were in full health. Participants also had to present a negative Covid-19 test result and a certificate to prove that they had been vaccinated against the virus.
Further information about the situation is not yet known as neither the organizers nor the police made a statement early on Sunday afternoon.
