A resurgent side from Barcelona are now within two points of La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid after taking a 2-0 win in Seville on Saturday.
Messi scored one goal and created another for Ousmane Dembele as they narrowed the gap at the top of the table to Diego Simeone’s Atletico, who have two games under their belt against the Catalan giants.
Messi pushed Dembele in just before half an hour after US international Sergino Dest hit the post with an earlier attempt.
Both teams continued to score offside before Messi struck five minutes from time after Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou initially turned down the Argentine ace.
Unbelievable, it was Messi’s 38th career goal against Sevilla – six more than he had against any other club.
The Barca skipper’s late goal means he has now found the net in eight consecutive La Liga games, making it Messi’s best scoring in two full years.
The legendary magician was central to many of Barcelona’s positive actions on the pitch – causing seizures for the Seville rearguard intended to limit his influence, as demonstrated by an incident when Joan Jordan of Seville tried unsuccessfully to catch Messi at one point Fight rugby.
“Bruh, seriously, WTF did he try to harm Messi?” joked one fan.
Losing Sevilla means a win of 10 straight wins for Julen Lopetegui’s team, but on Wednesday they have the chance to take revenge when they face Barcelona again in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals.
Sevilla were successful in the first encounter and took their own 2-0 victory.
